Costa Mesa is a small city located in Orange County, California. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad-Tijuana metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Costa Mesa were Spanish Franciscans who arrived in 1769. In 1821, the United States acquired California and by 1828, all of what is now Orange County had been acquired. Today almost everything within city limits takes place either within or around campus boundaries including law enforcement functions..... Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California. It was founded in 1915 by American expatriate John Hargrave and his wife, the former Clara Barton. The population reached its peak of 82,824 in 1951 and has since declined to its current level of 32,917. The city is located on the banks of the Santa Ana River and bordered by Anaheim to the north, Newport Beach to the east, Laguna Niguel to the south and Brentwood to the west. The first European settlers in what is now Costa Mesa were Hugh Hefner's father-in-law from England and other Englishmen who had come overland from San Francisco Bay area during 1849–51. In 1915 John Hargrave established himself as an American millionaire grazer with interests in citrus farming, real estate development (including Costa Mesa), shipping and manufacturing. Known as "theFather of Costa Mesa", he spent lavishly on new development including a golf course that still exists today; two stately hotels—the Mission Inn (founded 1912) and the Irvine Hotel (founded 1923)—and many other structures including a library (1915), post office (1916), bank (1920), movie theater (1928) and fire station (1929). In 1928 he also built a large home known as White Sands Ranch which remains standing today within walking distance of downtown Costa Mesa. Hargrave's Pasadena-based company donated land for what would become Stanford University; after years of effort by students and others it was dedicated on April 4, 1896 with initial enrollment of 248 students under Professor Henry Sibley. The university changed its name to Stanford University School of Medicine in 1957; currently it has over 40 colleges/schools across six campuses with major medical centers located throughout Southern California: Palo Alto Medical Center(Palo Alto), USC Medical Center(Los Angeles/Burbank/Anaheim), UCLA School of Dentistry(Los Angeles/West Hollywood/Newport Beach), UCSF Medical Center(San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley) and San Diego State University(San Diego). However, despite these successes there were constant struggles with financial instability which led to mergers among various institutions until finally destruction following World War II when all but three schools were destroyed or merged into one giant institution: Stanford University Hospital campus became part of Kaiser Permanente while Children’s Hospital Los Angeles was created from parts of both Kaiser Permanente hospitals—one still stands as one building on Olympic Boulevard near Westwood Village shopping center while another buildings near Downtown LA houses Point Loma Nazarene University.)
