Covina is a town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 21,769 at the 2010 census. Covina is located on the eastern edge of the city of Los Angeles and is bordered by Diamond Bar to the east and Compton to the south. It lies between Downtown Los Angeles and Catalina Island. The name Covina is thought to come from "kovin" or "cow" in Spanish and means place where cows are kept. The first white person to live in Covina was José Ortega who settled there in 1853. He named his community after himself – Covina Vieja (Old Covina). The first post office opened in 1854. In 1870, three men founded what would become known as Centerville which lies just east of present-day Covina. They were George Witte, Augustus Kelley and Amos Kendall Sr., all natives of Ohio who owned land near Pasadena then called Toluca Heights. Centerville became a village in 1871 when it incorporated as an unincorporated community with a school, store, blacksmith shop, hotel and several other small buildings before becoming an incorporated city with its own government in 1912 with Jorge Moreno as its first mayor In 1923, Hollywood studio executives decided that they wanted their own town withinLOS ANGELES COUNTY so they bought most of downtown los angeles for $1 million dollars They built movie theaters just south of downtown (now Robertson Boulevard)and established two schools: one for actors/publicity typesnamed after some famous stars like Cecil B DeMille while another for kids was named after president Franklin D Roosevelt At one point they even had their own railroad line running through town but that ended up being stopped due to lack of funding
