The Coast Guard has been in operation in Covina, California since 1887. The first Coast Guard station was established in Covina on April 14, 1887. The present day Coast Guard Station Covina is located on Kittredge Street, just east of the city limits. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was organized on December 21, 1923. On January 1, 1924, the Auxiliary became a part of the Coast Guard as an organizational unit and began providing auxiliary services to the CG. From its beginnings as a civilian organization until it was merged into the CG on October 1, 2002, the Auxiliary operated under three command heads: Naval District 7 (1924-2002), Sector Pacific Command (2002-present), and United States Southern Command (2008-present). On July 4th 1916 members of the Volunteer Reserve Bureau of Firemen fought in World War I while assigned to Great Lakes Division Headquarters at Zanesville Illinois. A plaque dedicated to this history can be found at Zanesville Municipal Airport which reads “In memory of men who offered their lives for our country during World War I; this plaque stands as a tribute to those who gave their time and effort." This event is also commemorated every year by Memorial Day Parade which takes place throughout town downtown with floats made up entirely of volunteers from different parts of America plus military veterans from nearby commands including USMC/USAF/Navy

Covina is a small city in the Antelope Valley of Southern California. It is located on U.S. Route 101, about 25 miles west of Los Angeles and 50 miles east of San Diego. The population was 32,824 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Los Angeles County. Covina's downtown contains two large shopping malls – Covina mall and Fashion Center – as well as three smaller ones: Covina Valley Shopping Center, Covina Crossing Shopping Center, and South Park Plaza Mall. There are also several small businesses and restaurants in the town center. The history of Covina goes back to 1887 when four men from Spain founded a rancho (farm) called Rancho Santa Fe de la Laguna near present-day Covina Hills. The area that now includes Covina was part of this original rancho. In 1897, James Wickersham purchased some land east of what is now Covina for $2,000 cash payments from José Gomez y Costilla, brother-in-law of Pío Pico who had bought the same land from Juan Bautista Alvarado 10 years earlier. Wickersham named his new development “CovINA” after his wife’s birthplace in Valencia, Spain (now Alicante). In 1912, James Wickersham sold additional property to Percival Doheny for $5 per acre ($50 per km²). Doheny developed an oil refinery on site which became known as “Doheny Oil Company” and produced gasoline until 1973 when it merged with ChevronTexaco AG to become Texaco Corporation (). Today there are several other businesses around this oncepronounced “cowtown” including a Holiday Inn Express & Suites by Marriott Vacation Rentals (), Denny’s hamburgers (), Costco () and Safeway (). Covinaland began developing its own water system in 1927 under contract with Water District No. 1of Pomona(). This system eventually became municipally owned and operated by Covinaland before being privatized by Metropolitan Water District No.. 8 in 1987 (). On November 7th 1990 voters passed Proposition V which amended certain city articles providing for increased self-governance within the community by creating a City Council comprising 11 individuals elected at largerather than through wards or districts like those existing today (). In 1992 residents approved passage of Proposition G which allowed for annexation into neighboring cities such as LAX/Westchester County Airport (). However these efforts ultimately failed due to opposition from local business interests.).
The Coast Guard has a rich history of giving gifts. Gifts have been given to members of the Coast Guard since 1935, when the first Coast Guard Museum was opened in New York City. The first gift from the Coast Guard was a watch, which was given to Lieutenant Commander Edwin J. Smith, Jr., during World War II. In 1954, the Commandant of the Coast Guard recommended that gift baskets be sent annually to all Service members and their families. Beginning in 1957, presents were also sent to decorated Service members who had achieved certain awards or had served in a distinguished manner. The tradition continued until 1995 when it was discontinued because of budgetary reasons. Since then, every year on Christmas Eve, the Coast Guard Museum opens its gift shop and offers an extensive range of gifts for sale including service medals and watches as well as artifacts from the history of coast guard gifting.

The population was 33,871 as of 2010. Covina's name comes from nearby Covina Hills, which were once part of the Rancho La Brea Tariff District. The city was founded in 1887 by George W. Covine and his wife Anna Jane McCloskey as a railroad town on what is now the east side of San Bernardino Mountains. At its peak in 1910, Covina had a population of 100,000 people but declined after World War I caused an economic decline and Santa Anita Racetrack closed in 1923. The city's fortunes began to revive during World War II with military housing developments and new manufacturing plants such as Fordson’s Carriage Works downtown. However, Covina experienced another downturn during the 1990s due to weak job growth and increased crime rates in Los Angeles County%. However, recent development has revived the community with new businesses opening up and support for local arts programs
