Covina, California is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 26,913 at the 2010 census. Covina is located on the San Gabriel Mountains and is east of Downtown Los Angeles. It has a Mediterranean-style architecture that began to be popular after World War II. Covina's ZIP code 91723 is home to many high-end businesses including Apple Inc., PepsiCo, and Lululemon Athletica Ltd.. In recent years Covina has seen growth in its arts and culture scene with several new theaters and galleries opening up as well as some small but successful restaurants such as Zuni Cafe and Pappas Bros Pizza. The history of Covina begins with Mexican Americans who arrived following the United States conquest of Mexico in 1846. They soon built churches, schools, stores, homes and businesses here in what would become known as "the little mission town." Many of these early settlers were from Southern California such as José Cámpora who came from La Habra Heights near Los Angeles in 1847 or Antonio Reyes from Downey who arrived in 1850. Over time other Anglo immigrants also settled here including Englishman John Fenton (1851-1937) who started a grocery store that became one of Covina's most important institutions; Scotsman Archibald Robertson (1854-1939) who founded the first hotel here; German immigrant Friedrich Knoppers (1858-1927); Italian immigrant Luigi Nicolosi (1860-1943), among others. The community developed around two railroad stations which served it: Covina Junction on the Santa Fe Railway and Covina South on the Orange Empire Railway both located about two miles southeast of present day Covina Boulevard on then undeveloped Rancho San Francisco cattle grazing land now part of Citrus Heights neighborhood south of Century Boulevard. From these railways riders could access farming goods such as hay, wheat, tomatoes etc., for shipment to Southern California markets through nearby towns like Lancaster or Bakewell until railroads were replaced by automobiles beginning in earnest during World War I when local farmers began packaging food directly for American troops stationed overseas at naval bases throughout the Pacific Theater instead of shipping it all over Asia via sea route like previous generations had done. During World War II an estimated 25%of all jobs within Hollywood were related to munitions manufacturing so much so that Fort MacArthur was briefly called "Hollywood Air Force Base" due to this activity. After V-J Day Havasu City became America's first "all black" city while Covina experienced only white flight during those days although African Americans did work at local defense plants during those times albeit with lower pay overall than their white counterparts thanks largely to affirmative action programs instituted by President Franklin D Roosevelt during his last term in office prior to his death that same year
