Covina is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Covina is located on the Covina River and is east of San Bernardino. It is part of the larger city of Pomona. The name "Covina" comes from an Indian tribe known as the Ohlone. In 1849, four men from San Francisco named John Sutter founded a post called Covina on the banks of the Covina River in what is now eastern Kern County. They named it for a small town in England they had seen while on their way to sell land to cattlemen in that area. The first store in Covina was built by Wm Houstoun and his brother-in-law Samuel Morse near present day Spring Street and Colorado Boulevard. This small settlement grew gradually over time until it had a total population of about 100 people by 1881 when it became an incorporated municipality with separate government from San Bernardino County under then Mayor John Beane. A school was built in 1883 which served as both public and private schools until 1889 when it merged with San Bernardino's School District #3 to form one unified school system under Commissioner James Bogue (1859-1941). The pace of development slowed during World War II but resumed after hostilities ended; however, because Covina sat on open water along Interstate 10 between Los Angeles and Riverside counties, numerous factories closed up shop there during wartime production disruptions which created major economic hardship for many residents postwar years*.
