Covina is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 71,151 at the 2010 census. Smith built his first permanent home here after arriving on horseback from Santa Catalina Island. In 1844, Covina became part of what was then known as Alta California under Mexican rule. In 1847, following the Mexican-American War (1846-48), American forces captured Alta California and placed it under United States control. As a result of this event, Covina became part of the newly created city of Los Angeles proper within Los Angeles County. The population reached 30,000 by 1850 and 50,000 by 1860; however, due to prohibition laws passed during that period by President Abraham Lincoln – which were later repealed – few economic activities took place outside of downtown LA until after World War II when demand for housing increased among returning soldiers and their families who had left behind businesses and jobs in Mexico City during that war effort.
