Covina, California is a small town in Inyo County, California. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. Covina is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and it is bordered by Springdale to the north, Lancaster to the east, Lake City to the south and Monument Valley to the west. The Covina Creek flows through Covina and forms part of its border with Springdale. There are several small communities within Covina: Big Springs/East Covina (a neighborhood), Cathedral Hills (a gated community), Diamond Lakes (an agricultural community), Deer Park/South Deer Park (a residential community), East Covina/Rancho Moreno Heights (the largest city-owned shopping center in Inyo County) and Falcon Valley Rancho Mirage Viewpoint (one of two remaining 435 acre ranchos in Inyo County). Covrina was founded in 1887 as a station on Stagecoach's First Transcontinental Railroad. It became an important military post during World War II due to its proximity to Yuma Proving Grounds for plutonium production. The post was closed in 1971 but reopened as a convention center in 1990-1991. After years of decline, Covina's economy has begunto revive with new development such as an interstate highway interchange and a hotel complex that opened in 2009 called The Westin Las Vegas Resort & Casino

After the war, the population increased again until most of the residents left for other parts of California during the 1960s migration. The last resident died in 1993 and now there is only a small community of buildings remaining from when Covina had over 1,500 residents. Today, Covina is mainly known for its heritage as an agricultural community that produced hay and straw for local farmers up until 1940. In 1892, George Covina donated land to create the city of Covina. The city was originally called Covina Springs because of its springs that flowed through the town. The name change came about because of the Spanish phrase "covinas" which means cowherds.
