The National Guard in California is a branch of the military that is responsible for providing security and defense within the state. It was first organized in 1898 as part of the State militia, and has sincegrown into one of the largest paramilitary organizations in America. The National Guard provides over 1 million soldiers and civilians with essential services such as guard duty, search and seizure duties, disaster relief, and critical infrastructure protection. In 1924, Congress passed a bill authorizing the formation of a national guard division within California. In 1928, this division was renamed the California National Guard. The first Commander-in-Chief of the California National Guard was General James M. Gavin who served from 1929 to 1933. From 1933 to 1941 John Leland led the organization while it was known as The Californian Guardsmen. From 1941 to 1945 it was known as The United States Army's First Defense Division (CAD). When World War II began on September 2nd 1940 President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized establishment of an all-national military force under his command called The United States Army Air Forces at San Diego which became active on October 16th 1940 with two squadrons Of P-40 fighters each stationed at Hawthorne Field and Empire Airport respectively . After Pearl Harbor American forces expanded their role so that they were activated throughout Greater California under commanders Major General George Custer (1941-1945) Colonel Harry Hunt (1945-1946), Colonel Dowling Hildebrandt (1946), colonel Edward Joffre (1947), Lieutenant Colonel William Steuart (1948) and Major General Edwin Easley (March 9th 1949 - December 15th 1949). On January 10th 1950 Americans moved their families into barracks located at Ft Shafter which became available after Camp Pendleton closed its gates on December 5th 1949. At Fort Irwin they set up quarters until May 1951 when they returned to Ft Shafter where they remain today as part of 4 Infantry Brigade Combat Team 523rd Infantry Regiment headquartered at Simi Valley CA

The National Guard is a unit of the United States Armed Forces that primarily consists of professional soldiers who are called to duty by the President of the United States. The National Guard was first established in 1792 when Congress passed an act to raise an army for service in the French and Indian War. In 1903, the National Guard consisted of militia companies from each state organized into battalions. The Militia Act of 1903 authorized national guard units to be raised by presidential proclamation for periods up to 12 months, but no longer than three years. These units were limited to male citizens between 18 and 45 years old who had been naturalized as Americans and were registered with their local militia company or battalion. On November 16, 1917, during World War I, President Wilson designated all American military forces as part of the “National Military Establishment” which would become known as the Army and Navy Department on October 14, 1918. This new organization would grow significantly over time with different branches being created including: artillery (the Marine Corps), cavalry (the Air Force), Coast Artillery (later becoming Marines) and troops belonging to other services such as armor (), reconnaissance (), signals () and infantry (). Covina, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. Covina is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name Covina is derived from the word "cow" and "vine." Covina began as an agricultural community and today produces produce such things as grapes, apples, almonds and other vegetables. The first people to live in Covina were Native American Indians who hunted and gathered food near what is now downtown Covina. European settlers arrived in 1849 when Job Moses left Rancho San Fernando with his family to build a ranchero east of present-day Covina. They named their new settlement after John Cowan, one of their pioneers. In 1853, mining operations commenced in nearby hills northeast of Covina by Ayer & Earle Gold Mines Company which became known as the Kernville District of California Mining Company Limited Partnership which was organized on November 2nd, 1853 under the laws of Great Britain. On December 12th 1860 gold was found at Sutter’s Mill north of present day Covina by George Sutter who soon thereafter named his property “Goldsboro” after himself but changed it to “CovINA” on October 24th 1865 because he felt that this location would be more likely to yield rich gold specimens than any other place within miles thereof.. On January 1st 1870 James Hutton leased 250 acres from Nicholas Metastasio for $6 per acre (the total land area then leased from Nicholas Metastasio was 1200 acres). On February 8th 1870 Robert Harper acquired 100 acres from Nicholas Metastasio for $8 per acre (the total land area then acquired from Nicholas Metastasio was 1400 acres). That same year James Hutton sold 500 acres adjacent to his purchase from Robert Harper for $10 per acre (the total land area then purchased from James Hutton was1600 acres). This sale included all the areas east ofpresent day Colusa River including future communities like Menifee and Fullerton On March 14th 1870 Wm Power leased 400 acres adjoining original 100 acre purchase by James Hutton from Nicholas Metastasio for $12 per acre (the total land area then leasedfromNicholasMetastasiowas1800acre). power also built a millstream called Fullerton Creek on site later renamed Menifee Creek after him also serving as water supply for numerous businesses in fullerton county over time
Covina is a city in Southern California and the county seat of San Bernardino County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 68,826. It is located on the east bank of the River San Gabriel in Riverside County, about 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. The original town site was donated by Juan Bautista Covina and his family to the community in 1871. The name comes from Covina Creek which runs through it. The first post office opened in 1875 and was named Covina after Juan Bautista Covina himself. The City was incorporated on February 14, 1902. In 1915, World War I veteran Johnnie Cochran settled in Covina with his wife Alma and their two children upon return from fighting in Europe; he started a small clothing store there before retiring as a middle-man wholesaler for other businesses throughout Orange County during Prohibition era Covina has been known variously as "The Hill Country Settlement", "Olduvai Gorge", "The Rancho Viejo Settlement" or simply "The Cities". In 1924, when new freeway construction began around Riverside County's edge, portions of Covina were included within the newly created State Route 232 corridor connecting Indio to Los Angeles proper; thus much of what is now CovINA history takes place outside its municipal boundaries
