The area now called Covina was first settled by Native Americans in 1844 as part of Rancho San Vicente de la Huerta Mission District. A post office called Covina was established in 1849, and remained in operation until1892. The name "Covina" derived from Spanish "cova" meaning meadow or clover field, and "vinosa" meaning small or insignificant place. In 1880, John Wesley Dobson developed a rancho east of present-day Covina and named it Dobsonville after himself and his brother Samuel Dobson (1787-1868). In 1902, Robert Hite purchases land to the south of Dobsonville from Hume for $2 million.
