In 1821, José Cudahy and his brothers founded the first permanent settlement in what is now Cudahy, California. The men were original owners of Rancho de las Palomas, a small ranch that they farmed for over a decade. In 1827, the area was acquired by Antonio Maria Del Valle who donated it to the State of California as part of the Rancho San Francisco grant. The land was improved by Del Valle's son and successor, Don Juan Bautista Nieto. The town of Cudahy began to form in earnest after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. In 1834, Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered all Anglo-Americans removed from Mexico City and placed them under military occupation. Most Anglo-Americans fled to what is now Southern California but José and his brothers stayed behind to help build their new community on an attractive site overlooking the Sacramento River Valley. During its early years, Cudahy was known for its fertile soil and cattle grazing; however, it soon became noted for its hot springs and mineral resources which led to rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Beginning in 1865, local entrepreneurs developed various businesses including mining operations; this led to increased trade with nearby Nevada Territory and Arizona Territory which led to increased economic development throughout Northern California. Cudahy experienced significant growth during World War II as many American troops stationed there returned home after fighting in Europe or Japan; this triggered an increase in population which continued until 2000 when Census counted just over 5400 residents living within the city limits). AfterWorld War II ended, agricultural production declined while heavy industry took hold due primarily to several large projects initiated by Mayor James Aulin (1949-1976), most notably Interstate 5 (I-5) which ran through town center concurrent with construction of numerous high school stadiums across northern California feeding into Silicon Valley jobs northward). Today Cudahy is a vibrant community full of culture, history & opportunity!
