Cudahy is a small town in southern Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The name Cudahy comes from the Yokut word "kuh-dah" meaning "to gather." The first settler in Cudahy was James Fenton, who arrived in 1847. In 1853, John Hennessey settled there and named it after his brother-in-law Daniel Cudahy from Boston, England. In 1859, William Larkin purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land adjoining present day Rancho Adobe for $5 per acre ($40 per hectare). He built a adobe cabin and called it Larkin's Cabin. In 1865 he sold the property to Joseph Prewitt for $10 per acre ($240 per hectare). Prewitt named it Post Office Station because he planned to build a post office there. The post office was established on October 15th 1865 by Wm Husted and Jno Ayer with letters sent from Los Angeles via stagecoach. In 1870 Wm Husted sold another parcel of land to George Matson which included alcove in present day Casa Grande Park Mall off Viau Avenue near High School Road; this parcel also became known as “Matson’s Paddock” because George Matson used it for horse racing during Prohibition days when alcohol was not allowed in California On November 5th 1890 David Dudley bought 190 acres (77 hectares) of Cudahy Center from Hiram Sutter for $20 per acre ($640 per kilometer squared). Dudley renamed it Dudley Landmark after his initials DUDley and developed it into what is now known as Dudley Heights development which still stands today on about . This area saw heavy commercial development with stores like Kress & Co., Mercantile Hardware Stores and Diamond Shamrock being located here up until 1959 when they all moved out due to increased competition elsewhere in Kern County Dudley donated 3/4ths of his remaining land holdings including Dudley Heights to the city of Bakersfield so that Bakersfield could develop them into an urban area adjacent to its larger city center while keeping much of their rural character intact
