Cudahy is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Joaquin River and is bordered by Fresno on the east, Bakersfield on the west, and Stockton on the north. The name of the town comes from an account of a visit by Mission Santa Fe traders to this area in 1827. They encountered natives who called it "Cuidahy" which means "hollow place." The first white person to live in Cudahy was George Fenton in 1872. In 1902 Cudahy had a post office and one school; by 1924 there were two schools, three post offices (including one for ZIP code 93601), and ten businesses including four banks. In 1945 there were only five businesses - all agriculture-related - with a population of just over 100 people. However, since then many new businesses have arrived, most notably Citgo Petroleum Company which has its corporate headquarters in Cudahy. Today's economy is based primarily on farming while some local industries include manufacturing ExxonMobil's Mobil Refinery No. 3 and Hewlett-Packard’s HP Incorporated plant northwest of town near North Loma Road. Today, Cudahy is known for its small-town atmosphere and its significant contributions to California culture. The town has an active historical society that preserves resources such as Historic documents from original settler families as well as cultural artifacts from local Indians who lived here before white settlement began.

In 1902, Agrarian Workers Party members John Fitch and Harry Bridges established a cooperative farm near present-day Union City that continues to be run by members today
