It lies about 36 miles (59 km) north-northwest of Fresno and about 22 miles (33 km) east of Bakersfield. The Cudahy area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1850, gold was discovered in this area and people from nearby Fresno began to come to work on the mines. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1870 it had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1908, Cudahy became an independent city and it has since continued to grow with new businesses opening up and residents moving into the community. Today, Cudahy is known for its wide variety of cultures which include Mexican American, Anglo, Armenian and Hawaiian influences.

Cudahy is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 3,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cudahy was first settled in 1879 by German immigrants from Hesse on the Palouse River. In 1898, it became an incorporated town under the name of San Joaquin Settlement and got its current name in 1903 when it united with nearby Mowry to form Cudahy Township. The discovery of gold around Lassen Lake in 1848 led to large influxes of miners and their families to what is now Cudahy and other areas surrounding San Joaquin Valley. By 1870, there were 6232 people living in Cudahy Township (of which only 2% were Native American). The mines were closed during World War I because of lack of resources, but reopened in 1922 after prohibition ended. They continued until they were closed again by Federal prohibition authorities in 1933. In 1907 Cudahy had 9 stores and 30 residents; it had grown rapidly since its incorporation as an incorporated townsite three years earlier. In 1912 the first high school opened in town and soon afterwards a several churches and other businesses sprang up including a lumberyard, bakery, post office, hotel/motel (now known as Holiday Inn), grocery store (later Joes), barber shop, livery stable and more; all operated out of one building which still stands today - that would be the old Town Hall Building (still used for school functions). It wasn't until 1963 when a new school was built north of town on State Route 395 - that's when things really changed for CUDAHY! With improvements made to Highway 395 during this time period such as widening lanes for traffic heading into or out of town - many small businesses sprung up throughout the village center like Girdler's Hardware Store which still operates today adjacent to Riverside High School - Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor next door & Donatellos Barber Shop across from City Hall...the list goes on...& so does the nostalgia factor ;)
