The California Navy has a rich history that dates back to 1847 when the first USS Constitution sailed from San Francisco. The navy was formed in 1906 as the United States Naval Reserve, and it played an important role in World War II. In 1965, the navy merged with the Marine Corps to form the U.S. Marines. The California Navy is now a part of the Department of Defense and its mission is to protect America’s coasts and waters through naval force, maritime transportation, seahorse diplomacy, international cooperation and public education. By 1870, the town had a population of 350 people. Cudahy grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location on a major route between Los Angeles and Phoenix. Cudahy is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,874 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Commodore John Cudahy and his family who were the first white settlers in what is now Kern County. The area that would become Cudahy was first occupied by the Kumeyaay people in 1824. In 1851, prospector George Hearn discovered gold near present-day Cudahy while exploring for strikes near Winnemucca Pass. By 1865, numerous miners had found gold there and began to settle the area around present-day Cudahy. Mining operations continued until 1907 when the last gold mine was closed down. In 1916, the US government leased of land east of downtown Cudahy to build an airfield for World War I pilots training at nearby Sultana Field northwest of Bakersfield. The airport became operational on July 15, 1916 as Wheeler Field and remained in use until it was sold to Kaiser Air Lines in 1939 and closed down again during World War II. It reopened as Kern Valley Airport after World War II and served as a general aviation airport until it was closed again in 1990 following deregulation of commercial aviation within California.
