Cudahy is a small town in northern California. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County. The name comes from the nearby San Joaquin River and its tributaries. The first Europeans to visit Cudahy were fur traders, led by Captain Gabriel Rodriguez in 1824. They named the area after José Cudahy, a Spanish explorer who had been searching for a route to China through Southern California. After years of exploration, Rodriguez's group foundered on September 11, 1829 when their ship ran aground on shoals near present-day Midway Island. A local man, Manuel Nieto, foundering on the same day discovered oil while exploring the area; he drilled two wells and brought oil back to Mexico City before being sold to an American company in 1834. In 1850–1851 John Waddell explored and charted what is now known as Route 66 from Bakersfield downriver to Midway Island; he named it after José Cudahy because of its similarity to his pathfinders' description of that route." In 1860 Cudahy became part of Mexicali County when that county was created from parts of Tulare and Kern counties. The post office at Cudahy began operating May 1, 1861 (it changed its name again on October 5th), under the name "Mexicali". On January 3rd 1870 it received its own ZIP code: 91720

On July 4, 1846, Cudahy was founded by Captain George F. Cudahy and his wife, Emma. The town was named for Capt. Cudahy's mother-in-law who had died in 1835. The first post office in the town was established on January 1, 1850. In 1872, the first school opened in the town. The town experienced a population growth rate of over 50% from 1880 to 1890 due to new construction and agricultural production brought about by gold discovery in Northern California. The mining industry ended around 1920 when lead and silver prices plummeted due to global recession. As a result of this decline, the population of Cudahy decreased from its peak of 2,000 in 1930 to just 100 people by 1940. In 1959, Cudahy became an unincorporated community within Los Angeles County when it was annexed into that county at its creation.
