The area that would become Culver City was first settled by Miwok Indians in the 17th century. In 1853, during the Mexican-American War, General Zachary Taylor's army passed through this region on their way to battle against Mexico. General John C. Fremont also fought here in 1853. The land that became Culver City was purchased from the Miwok Indians by Elias Swayne in 1861 for $160 cash and 10 cattle. The name "Culver City" originated from Captain George Washington Culbertson, who surveyed the area in 1864 while stationed at Fort Worth, Texas as part of his military duty as Commandant of Transcontinental Railroad Survey Corps member #1. The first post office called Culver City was established on July 7, 1865, with Elisha Beall as its first director. On November 1st 1870 it became part of Los Angeles County and within one year it had a population of 30 people! By 1886 there were over 100 businesses operating in what is now known as downtown Culver City! In 1907 Los Angeles County built its first jail which stood on Fourth Street near Vine Street today! In 1929 Hollywood began production on pictures such as "The Public Enemy" and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". At this time most films were shot out OF town or at other locations such as Monterrey Proving Grounds outside Monterrey or El Paso Proving Grounds inside El Paso where used ammunition could be found for filming purposes! Many famous actors and actresses filmed here including Clark Gable, Mary Pickford and Myrna Loy! After World War II ended many movie companies left California for Illinois but some continue to produce movies here including Paramount Pictures which still uses Culver City today for some scenes from its latest productions!
