Culver City is a city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 82,813 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Los Angeles–New York-Fremont, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to reach Culver City were Spanish Conquistadors on September 22, 1769 when they arrived on horseback from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel with three small boats and found a group of Californios living near what is now downtown Culver City. In 1802, Captain John Waddell of the United States Exploring Expedition discovered and named Carbonvale Creek after Englishman Samuel Culper who had landed there earlier that year with his party. In 1881, Harry Chandler established Culver City's first commercial establishment as a general store and post office at Seventh Street and Vermont Avenue. At this time, Culver City was part of the unincorporated area known as Rancho Cucamonga which was later annexed by Pasadena. On October 15, 1907 during World War I American forces raided German ammunition dumps at Chatsworth (now Van Nuys) and nearby communities including Culver City where they found 50 tons of explosives destined for use in munitions plants in Europe. This led to an international incident that became known as "the Chatsworth Raid" because it happened near Chatsworth House which then belonged to British Prime Minister David Lloyd George.
