Culver City, California is a city in Southern California. The population of Culver City was 736 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Ocean about 20 miles south of Los Angeles and has a Mediterranean climate. The area now known as Culver City was first settled by Mexicans in 1847. The town was established on November 6, 1870 by James Irvine, who had come from Ireland to explore the new land that he believed would be rich in gold. On February 17, 1872, when William Mulholland discovered oil reserves near Santa Monica Boulevard and Venice Boulevard and made an offer for them to be developed into a continuous production field with rights to anyone who found oil within fifty feet of the surface, Culver City became one of the most important cities in Southern California. In 1902 Hollywood began to develop as a result of an agreement between Edison Brothers Pictures Corporation and Pathé Exchange Railway Co., which gave movie theaters throughout Los Angeles access to Pathé film prints imported from Europe. In 1915 Hollywood won its first Academy Award for Best Picture - "The Grapes of Wrath". By World War II Culver City's economy had turned towards defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing who built aircraft manufacturing plants there during World War II; however, postwar growth halted after the end of hostilities due to restrictions on military spending by both America and Great Britain. During this time much new development took place around First Street/Venice Boulevard intersection; including such popular tourist destinations as Universal Studios (now Islands Media) and Fantasyland amusement park; services such as cable TV were available; despite this rapid growth some major problems arose including high rents which led to many people moving out during the early 1990s for more affordable housing options outside of town. However following Proposition 13 (the anti-gentrification measure initiated by then Mayor Richard Riordan) CulverCity experienced significant redevelopment culminating with the construction of two luxury hotels: One Century Tower (now tallest building in downtown Los Angeles) behind Beverly Hills Hotel located at 9th Street/Metro Rail Station (then called Lankershim Blvd.) Streets surrounding One Century Tower have been renamed "CulVerCity Avenue" in honor of its developers while other streets nearby still retain their original namesakes despite recent gentrification efforts similar thereto like Saugus Rd./Fantasyland Ave., etc.; making CulverCity one unique example among large American metropolitan areas where long-standing residential segregation continues unabated even into post-industrial times

Culver City, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 94,883 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city limits of Los Angeles and is bordered by Vernon to the north, Hawthorne to the east, Lynwood to the south, and West Beverly Hills to the west. The name Culver City comes from an early settler named John Culver who arrived in 1853. The first post office at Culver City was established in 1854. In 1856, gold was discovered near present-day Culver City and this led to increased settlement in what would becomeculverscity. The first school in culverscova was opened in 1861 by Mrs. Jane Addams with aid from Governor George Condon. In 1865, a canal was built through downtown that allowed goods and passengers to be transported easily between Los Angeles and Pasadena; this also led to more people moving into culverscova as transportation improved. In 1886, Hollywood became an incorporated town when it split off from Culver City proper following passage of a law by state legislators. By 1910, Hollywood had grown so large that it absorbed all but one of culverscova's original municipalities: Vernon had left for economic reasons while Hawthorne retained its status as a small rural community until 1959 when it became part of West Beverly Hills
