Culver City, California is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 115,241 as of the 2010 census. The area now includes the neighborhoods of Los Feliz and Venice Beach. Culver City, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 81,883 at the 2010 census and it is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. It forms part of the Westside of downtown Los Angeles. The city was founded on August 14, 1888 by Jesse Culver and his brother-in-law George H. Smith as a small town called "Culver City." On February 1, 1892, it was incorporated as a city. The name came from Ulysses S. Grant's last name – "Culver" – because he had once proposed that the United States Territories be organized into counties along arterial routes so that development would not have to follow army roadways. This plan failed but helped give rise to Culver City's nickname of "The Venice of the West". In 1911–12, when Pasadena became an independent city, Culver City annexed part of Pasadena's east side including Holmby Hills and Woodland Hills; these annexation were considered legal due to then-city councilman William Mulholland's role in pushing for them. As early as 1907, residents were petitioning to become an independent municipality separate from downtown Los Angeles; this effort failed when Culver City Mayor George Kelling successfully vetoed it at a meeting on October 15th 1907.
