It is located on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles and is bordered by Pasadena to the south, West Hollywood to the east, Santa Monica Boulevard to the north and Venice Beach to the west. The first people to live in Culver City were Native Americans who hunted deer and other game in what is now Culver City Park. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1849 as part of Rancho Niguel Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Yorba by Governor Manuel Nieto. In 1868, John C. Fremont founded what became known as "the Fremont Depot" on Sand Canyon Road near present-day Laurel Canyon Boulevard; it served as a depot for several years until it burned down in 1861. A new depot was built at 8th Street and Wilmington Avenue in 1872; it served as an ammunition depot during World War II before being razed due to fire damage in 1945. In 1888, Henry Mulholland purchased land east of present-day Culver City Blvd., including what is now Topanga Canyon Boulevard, which he called Mulholland Village (later renamed Topanga Hills). He developed this land into one of Southern California's leading citrus groves with his Mulholland Orchard company. The orchards produced oranges, apples, bananas and grapefruit from 1893 until 1972 when they were acquired by Citrus Heights Corporation. In 1922–24 Samuel Goldwyn bought shares of Mulholland Orchard Company from Mulhalland Properties Trustees; through these purchases he became involved with film production throughout Southern California. Goldwyn also established himself as a powerful political figure after moving quickly to gain office at various levels throughout Western United States during the 1920s and 1930s despite having no filmmaking experience whatsoever. In 1836, Captain John Culp of USS Discovery discovered rocks that would become Culver City when he sailed past them while exploring for new land to ranch in. In 1887, George Washington Dixon bought land near present-day Culver City from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $8 per acre (2¢ per foot). Dixon named his new town after himself – Culver City – and built a small community here based on his theory that goods shipped down to LA via Yacht Club Row would be safe from pirates should they attempt to rob vessels en route. However, Dixon's town failed to gain much popularity and quickly disbanded. However, during World War II an aluminum plant operated by United States Aluminum Company (USA) at Factory Park in Industry became one of the most important plants in America due to its significant contribution to American war production. As a result of this fact, many people living near USA plants came into contact with aluminum products which gave CulverCity its unique flavor today. After World War II ended, industry declined in California so much so that there were few jobs available for locals outside of manufacturing job losses only compounded by high rents which kept prices high even though profits were low because no new housing had been built since WWII! In 1957 voters passed Measure M which created a public works program called “The Glendale Program” which funded many things such as streetscape changes and widening of culverts throughout Glendale includingculverscenevelopment! This program brought about thousands more residents into culVER CITY over time! In recent years however rent inflation has outpaced wage growth leaving many residents struggling each month trying to keep up with soaring prices without any hope for relief any time soon!
