Culver City is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 66,242 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and the second most populous city in Southern California after Inglewood. The first people to live in Culver City were Spanish settlers who arrived there in 1781. The name "Culver City" derives from the Palouse River which flows through the area. The first Anglo-Americans to arrive were American soldiers who served during World War II and afterwards came to work at Boeing plants in nearby Redmond and Northridge. They called their new community "Boeingville". In November 1945, Culver City became an incorporated municipality with a population of 30,000 people; it was only the third town in Los Angeles County to be so granted (the others being South Pasadena and Carson). In 1957, Culver City merged with Northridge into one municipality with a total population of 80,000 people. In 1959, Northridge voted to become an independent city separate from Culver City. In 1970, upon its merger with LaVerne – following complaints by residents about high taxes and few services available within LaVerne – CulverCity lost its charter vote but regained it by popular vote two years later when Proposition 13 passed that year giving cities such as La Verne more power over their own finances. On January 1st 2013 all municipal functions of both cities were combined into one single entity known as "La Crescenta". During Prohibition it was home to America's largest speakeasy known as "the Pink Panther". After prohibition ended on December 15th 1920 Outside liquor stores were allowed within limits set by state law while still selling beer and wine
