The city’s population tripled between 1941 and 1945 as people mobilized to serve in the armed forces or work for war industries such as munitions production or shipbuilding. During World War II, many civilians were killed when Japanese bombers targeted residential areas around Los Angeles; however, no civilian casualties occurred within Culver City itself during this time period. After World War II ended, much of what had once been done with regards to military activity near Los Angeles stopped because there were no new wars being fought across North America or Europe necessitating such an infrastructure response; instead, it was used more for developing infrastructure within LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) Headquarters located adjacent to Hollywood Boulevard which housed state-of-the-art law enforcement tools and equipment developed since WWII including radar equipment used today by local police departments all over Southern California In 1951, President Harry S Truman established Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base just north of downtown LA serving as a staging ground for troops deploying into Indochina (now Vietnam). After several years of operations at Camp Pendleton Malibu Peninsula became available on Santa Monica Boulevard overlooking points east along Lighthouse Reef approximately 12 miles long extending from Point Lobon off shore southward towards Newport Beach MacArthur Airport about 8 miles southwest served primarily as an airfield used also by Naval Air Force flying training missions until 1971 when it was closed due largely to helicopter noise issues created by then newly built Beverly Hills airport adjacent thereto only 5 miles west
