The Cupertino Army National Guard is a unit of the United States Department of Defense that was organized in 1922. The Guard's purpose is to support military and civil activities within the city of Cupertino, California. Cupertino has been home to an army for over 100 years. On April 14, 1907, the first corps artillery regiment (1st CA) was organized at Cupertino by Captain John Coyle from the 1st San Francisco Infantry Regiment. At this time there were no Regular Army units garrisoning Cupertino and only civilian volunteers for defense. In 1916, when World War I began in Europe, the United States called up all male citizens age 18 or older in every state plus Washington D.C., to serve in soldiers’ veterans organizations as part of mobilization efforts under President Woodrow Wilson’s New Deal policies. On May 10th 1911 Major General John J Pershing ordered all military forces in California mustered into service on mobilized strength except those manning Coast Artillery batteries which were kept idle until November 1st because they had not received their equipment yet according to law No 2-9479 dated October 10th 1910 “An Act To Regulate Militia Forces In And Around The City Of Sacramento And Its Vicinity” also known as “An act for funding street lights” effective December 3rd 1910 with certain exceptions; these batteries being manned by civilians and subject to said reguardry from then on forth... This order means that all citizens between 18 and 40 years old living within 5 miles of Sacramento County were required to join the Military before November 1st 1911 when their equipment would become available according to law #2-9479! All men between 18 and 40 years old who lived within 5 miles of anycity other than Sacramento County were required to Join The Military! This order stated that anyone between 18 and 50 years old did not haveto enlist but if they enlisted they had To Serve For A Term Of 4 Years With Out Discharge! After World War I ended on August 15th 1919 Troop Company "A" 11th CA (Old US Cavalry Battalion) was deactivated at Camp Randall near Sacramento due to budget cuts made during peacetime military operations overseas which caused many companies/units deactivation including Troop Company "A" 11th CA which became part of tho National Guard Reserve on October 16th 1923 however it reverted back back into regular army custody on November 7th 1924 when troops arrived from Los Angeles area after being demobilized there earlier that year . On September 25TH 1926 Coyote battalion Milt Houlahan Headquarters & Service Company was activated at Banning with Battery A (4 guns) belonging thereto along side Battery B (3 guns) both belonging originally to Stickney rifle company ]becoming active at Banning until 1936] . From 1935 until 1941 battery A served as Headquarters & Service Coorps with Coyote battalion HQ stationed at East Palo Alto south of intersectionof Rodeo Drive & Menlo Park Boulevard]. In 1942 Coyote battalion HQ moved again becoming Headquarters & Services Brigade Group with five battalions located scattered around Bay Area[ commanding Battalions: Battalion Headquarters Coyote Gunnery Battalion Batallion Service Company Battalion Support Company Battalion Ammunition Column Battery A (1 gun), Battery B(3guns), Battalion Barracks Coyote Barracks barracks] ] Vesting rights [the jurisdiction] revert back unto THE CITY OF CUPRESSINO ON NOVEMBER 7TH 1924 WHEN THE ARMY REVERTED BACK TO CIVILIAN OWNERSHIP AFTER BEING DEMobilized IN LOS ANGELES AREA.. In 1951 a detachment from Redwood Arsenal District Armory came down661 days later arriving first at West Covina then moving south along Foothill Rd ultimately coming down here about mid-June 1952 [this detachment disembarked Anson Pye depot #7291 westbound train platform leading towards Moraga Valley Depot #71801 eastbound train platform], bringing appropriate arms procured thru various channels including sales occuring thru armorers associations throughout Southern California prior thereto.] Army units present during WWII included: 635 Sqdn Signal Search Team w/ AT rifles - Deployed 9/1941 Japan Earthquake hit areas northward Range 8 Mtns - Assisted evacuating people downed or lost property working construction sites North China Railway Airfield - Demolished 1945 Japanese airfield There are countless stories about troop movements through our city during World War II, but one story stands out above all others: That of 635 Squadron Signal Search Team operating from Mount Whitney during the Japan Earthquake bombings in 1941. When news reached townspeople about the raids taking place over Nagasaki, many residents took advantage of evacuation orders issued by their local military commanders—including Captains George Wesselmann and Herb Kappenberg—to leave for safety. After hearing about what happened in Nagasaki, Captains Wesselmann and Kappenberg decided it would be best if their squadron could help out where possible. So they gathered together some aircraft parts leftover after Operation Coronet—a mission conducted by U.S.-Canadian forces against German targets deep inside Nazi-occupied Japan—and created a new squadron named 635 Squadron SignalSearch Team – using only AT rifles– deployed 9/1941 across Japan following the earthquake strikes targeting industrial sites northward range 8 mountains… working construction sites North China Railway Airfield… destroyed 1945 Japanese airfield).
