It occupies the south end of the peninsula that separates Silicon Valley from Mountain View, and is bounded by Fremont to the east, Palo Alto to the north, Livermore to the south and Stanford University to the west. The city's history dates back to 1878 when it was part of Section 8 of Rancho San José de la Merced which several weeks earlier had been platted by John C. Frémont and others who were exploring southern California for new land grants. The first permanent residents were Native Americans who came overland from what is now Oregon around 1776. In 1868 Commodore George Dewey granted a Donation Land Claim (DLQ) for $3,000 to Anselm J. Howland which led to Cupertino being founded in 1879 as a small hamlet on top of Mount Diablo near what is now Menlo Park. At its peak in 1920 it had a population of about 60 people; today it has a population of over 85,417 and is one of America's most ethnically diverse cities with significant concentrations in Asian, Hispanic/Latino (of any race), African American (including recent migrants from Africa), Pacific Islander, European American and Mormon communities. Cupertino began as just another small town on top of a mountain but quickly became known for its high quality education system - including technology colleges like Xerox PARC - as well as its innovative architecture including homes designed byadobe architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Iwo Jima-native Raymond Loewy Jr.. In 1978 Apple Inc., then part of Xerox Corporation purchased Cupertino's original downtown property for $100 million making it one of America’s largest corporate acquisitions at that time; today Apple Campus 2 spans 5 square miles across three campusessituated adjacent to each other on hills above Mill Creek Valley near Interstate 580: campus A covers 4square miles with buildings dating backto 1959; campus B includes an adjacent parkland area covering 6 square miles with buildings dating backto 1997; and campus 3 includes large office complexesKroger Supercenter stores along Campus Road South) Today Cupertino remains one OFA crown jewel - home not just to some of Silicon Valley’s most innovative companies but also thousands more students from throughout Northern California working at some OfA member companies or attending local universities such as UC Berkeley or UCLA
Cupertino was founded in 1911 by Edward C. Mulligan and his wife, Jessie. The original Cupertino School District was organized on February 15, 1912. In 1916 the city of Cupertino annexed the Rural Ketchum Indian Reservation. On October 1, 1921 the City of Cupertino adopted a resolution to annex the village of Menlo Park which had been part of the rural Ketchum Indian Reservation. On December 12, 1922 Menlo Park incorporation was granted with a population of 953 residents and on January 1, 1923 Menlo Park became an official City under Mayor Harry Siever's leadership.
