Today, the Coast Guard is a vital part of California's coastal defense. The service was founded in 1915 as the United States Life Saving Service, and has since grown to include more than 17,000 members. The Coast Guard operates three main fleets--the Marine Patrol Fleet; the lighthouses and buoyancy-saving stations fleet; and the Search and Rescue Fleet. Each fleet provides an array of services essential for coastal defense, including search and rescue, law enforcement, maritime security, public safety, environmental protection and waste management. He also received numerous award nominations including three prestigious awards from the National Academy of Sciences (the Gold Medal Award for Research Achievement in Atmospheric Science and Engineering; The Edward Rowney Award for Excellence in Coastal Defense Technology;The James Moulder Award). In addition to his incredible military career, PFC Dean Whelan was also deeply involved with community service throughout his life. He served on boards such as Boys & Girls Clubs Of Silicon Valley (BGCV), Cupertino Unified School District Foundation (CUUSD Foundation), Apple Inc., silicon valley women's group PACLAQUEZ-SAN JOSE (SJRG)and several other organizations he chaired or helpedfounded over his long career with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 2001 he received an honorary Doctorate degree from Santa Clara University School of Law where he had been inducted into its alumni association that same year!
