The first Europeans to visit what is now Cupertino were Spanish soldiers on an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. It was part of Mexican Rancho Santa Clara land grant given to José Joaquín Cisneros in 1834. In 1868, American General John Tevis purchased some acreage south of town from Juan Castro for $2,500 and named it "Tevis Valley". On April 15, 1871, Commodore George Dewey anchored his flagship USS Constitution at anchor off shore while he visited nearby Alameda Cove for a day's sail before returning northward to San Francisco Bay on October 4th. Commodore Dewey named the new harbor after him - George Washington Dock (now North Beach).
