Cupertino was founded in 1879 by George Hewlett and Samuel Appleton as the town of Cupertino. Hewlett and Appleton named the town after their eponymous estate in England, which they had visited while on a business trip. The first residents of Cupertino were Hugh McCulloch, David Bovee, John Anderson, and James Mclntyre. The city's first post office was established in 1881. In 1912, the city became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2521. In 1916, the United States Postal Service moved its main mail processing center from San Francisco to Cupertino. In 1984, Apple Inc.'s new headquarters moved from San Jose to Cupertino; this made it the second largest company in Silicon Valley after Intel Corp., until Google Inc.'s move to Mountain View in 2010.
