The Cupertino National Guard was established on October 1, 1947 as the West Coast branch of the United States Army's Continental Command. The unit was originally composed of civilian volunteers who had been called up for service in the Korean War. On July 1, 1958, the National Guard was redesignated as a full-time military force with headquarters located in Cupertino. On November 12, 1957, the President of the United States signed into law Public Law 85-453 which created and authorized the establishment of a national guard system within California. This act also provided that all members of the National Guard serving in any capacity in California were to be considered members of the state's military forces and would be subject to all laws and regulations governing such forces. The first recruits to swear their allegiance to California were drawn from among those who had voluntarily enlisted in either Regular Army or Air Force units outside of California during hostilities between America and Korea (the "Korean War). This law also empowered Governor Ronald Reagan to call forth men from local volunteer fire departments and other agencies for active duty in support of state defense if he deemed it necessary due to an emergency situation withinCalifornia or because regular army or air forceunits were not available for duty. In addition, these individuals could be called upon by either the governor or acting governor when there was no government agency providing suitable personnel capable of performing a rescue operation due to natural disaster such as earthquakes or hurricanes. In 1959, Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell became commandant/director general while Major General Clarence Leland assumed command duties at Fort Bragg near San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District Station Embarcadero Wharf Noe Valley - now Downtown San Francisco BART station - until his retirement on December 31st, 1966; then Major General Richard Crippen took over command until May 1968 when he retired effective June 30th after more than twenty years service with USNAGCupertinoGuard assigned permanentlyto various commands throughout our State during which time he has supervised 3 toursin Viet Namduring 1965-1973; $4 million awarded him Vietnam Veterans Memorial Service Award Sponsored by Apple Incorporated Captain Harry Jerman served as commanding officer from August 1972 until his death on September 25th 1974 after being wounded leading unit throughout operational campaign against North Vietnamese Forces Autumn 1971 thru Spring 1973 Captain Harry Jerman remains oneof few remaining American soldiersof that warfrom combat area
