This radar station assisted with interceptions of Axis submarines during World War II which helped make America's water supply safe for American citizens. In 1955-1956, NAF Aircraft Maintenance Facility No 2 was constructed on land leased from Stanford University at Palo Alto Hills east of downtownCupertino near what is now Northridge Boulevard/Palo Alto Road. The purpose of this facility was to provide hangar space for Navy planes and helicopters while they were being overhauled or replaced; also it served as a training ground for pilots new to Aviation after their enlistment into the military service On July 1st 1957 Chief Petty Officer Alonzo Ladd made his historic speech giving notice that NAS(Cuyamaca) would become an independent naval air station under Admiralty Order n° 246 dated October 15th 1957 with jurisdiction over all waters within 7 miles Of shoreline including inland lakes & reservoirs etc… NAS Cuyamaca would be responsible For personnel growth thru recruit training both civilian & military flying schools then becomingFlight Officers Avionics Schoollater joined by Second Officer Flight Technician School later becoming First Officer Flight Technical School…. jet fighter operations began with F-4E Phantom IIs arriving here in early 1958″ (History Of Naval Air Stations By Lt Col Wm J Day III pg 206). Mr./Ldrg Arlo Riggs who commanded NAS Contraband from 1951-1955 when it became NAVSEA Contrbnd provides another view on this event: “With hostilities rapidly ending however Japan surrendered on September 2 1945 our focus turned towards other issues such as reconstruction” (Riggs History pg 239). After World War II ended there were few changes made to NAS Cuyamaca until 1959 when Headquarters Squadron changed name to Fleet Marine Force Squadron 1 – CVF One when command transferred from Commander Fifth Fleet Pacific Fleet To Commander Ninth Fleet Atlantic Ocean As embarked Marine Forces Command Element At Guantanamo Bay Cuba following 9/11 terrorist attacks” (History Of Naval Air Stations By Lt Col Wm J Day III pg 206). The change comes about because CVF One had more than 20 jets whereas Fleet Marine Force Squadron Two had just 6 jets! In 1960, Admiral Chester Nimitz relieved Admiral Stevenson who had been commander Ninth fleet since February 1959 and Nimitz activated CVF One Assigned To Carrier Strike Group Eighteen which included USS EnterpriseAlso Destroyer Escort Group Three consistingof destroyers escort carrier Task Unit 540000 member USS Acosta And USS Grays Harbor’Distant Patrol Vessel USCGC Buoy 44&SS Constitution Ship’s Serviceswere Also Aboard This Carrier Strikes Group That Conducted missions jointly With Other Units From time To Time Including Helicopter Missions etc….. During1960CVF One Was Reactivated And assigned To Carrier Strike Group Twenty Four Which IncludedUSS Theodore Roosevelt Other Ships That Participated Includes Los Angeles Now On Duty At Pearl Harbour Again..By 1962Now With More Jets It Was reassignedTo Carrier Strike Group Thirteen Which IncludedUSS Arizona Now operating Out Of Yokosuka JapanAs carriers strike group number Twelve Became CAPT Raymond James Johnston commanding From November 1970 Through January 1973 He Was Named Commanding General Royal Marines Commando brigade Europe Some Other Ships Participating Include HMS Erebus HMS Terror HMS Norfolk HMAS Vampire HMAS Perth And HMAS Melbourne These Ships Are Docked At Portsmouth England Today.. By 1976 All ships relativley Gone But Their Memory Lives On When They Were All Deployed Together Near Beirut Lebanon Our main mission Now Is Counter Terrorism Operationshellipulation Ops Against Militants etc…..
