Cypress is a city located in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. Cypress is the second most populous city in San Luis Obispo County after Santa Clara and is the 12th most populous city in California. The name of Cypress comes from an 1846 land grant to John C. Houghtaling from Mexican millionaire José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla. The first permanent settler in what became Cypress was Father Ignacio López de la Llave, who arrived on horseback on July 4, 1847. Father Miguel O'Higgins arrived with his band of Indians on October 7, 1851 and established Mission Concepción del Oro (later Presidio de Monterey).
