The history of Cypress dates back to 1876 when two ranchers, John Sutter and his brother George, sold 640 acres (250 hectares) of land at what is now Mesa Verde Drive to A.W. Kellogg for $1 per acre. In 1881, Kellogg divided the property into tracts and sold each tract to five settlers: Wm Hilty, Chas Cline, Geo Moulton, James Fenton*, Arthur Eldridge* and Isaac Asimov*. The first house constructed in what is now Cypress was erected on land donated by Asimov*. In 1903, when Orange County was created from portions of Los Angeles County (including downtown Los Angeles), Cypress became one of the original towns within it. The population had grown to 25,000 by 1907; however it declined rapidly during World War I because many men were drafted into military service and did not have enough money to return home; as a result there was little industry or commerce available outside of agriculture until after World War II when new factories began appear throughout Southern California such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation* plant #5 in nearby Fullerton *and Kaiser Aluminum Company plant #8 near El Monte *. Following World War II there were numerous waves of immigrants who arrived in Southern California including Mexican Americans who worked on farms east of Interstate 5 while white Anglo-Saxon Protestants came seeking jobs opportunities in cities like Los Angeles *. After decades of growth – which has included annexing adjacent neighborhoods such as La Mirada *and Pacoima *during annexation campaigns between 1926-1964 – there are now over 100 dwellings within walking distance either direct or via public transportation facilities [*the present day City limits]. Many people become residents here because they find quality schools close by (such as Cal State Northridge) or because they like the easy access to freeways that make life easier (*see “What do people think about living here?”).
