Cypress is a city in southern California, and the county seat of Orange County. The population was 133,651 at the 2010 census, making Cypress one of the most populous cities in Orange County. It is also one of the most populous cities in Southern California. Cypress has been a place for humans for over 10,000 years. The first people to live here were Mono Indians who hunted and gathered fruit near present-day Cypress Creek. The area now known as Cypress was first settled by Europeans in 1821 when Captain John Brougham and his party discovered oil wells on Rancho San Pedro Rey de la Paloma, just outside of downtown Cypress. The rigs soon became abandoned because of salt water intrusion from nearby Lake Ontario; however, Brougham's men built an adobe house on what is now First Street and named it "Brougham House." Afterward, other early settlers included American soldiers who fought under General Santa Ana during the Mexican-American War (1846–48). In 1850s another group of soldiers from New York arrived at Rancho San Pedro Rey de la Paloma and started drilling for oil; this time they found natural gas instead of oil. In 1853 Gasparilla Peak was recognized as a peak by Ulysses S Grant when he surveyed the Territory of Los Angeles; later that year Captains Hurd and Wilcox charted river courses through what is now Orange County to intersect routes leading to Lompoc about 12 miles east from Rancho San Pedro Rey de la Paloma. In 1863 John Wesley Powell explored part of this area while exploring Milk River Canyon northeast of today's Downtown Cypres
