Cypress, California is home to more than 1,000 years of marine history. The city’s earliest known inhabitants may have been the Ohlone people who lived in what is now Cypress from approximately 10,000 BC until AD 1000. Cypress was first settled by the Spanish in 1769 and soon became an important port for goods reaching San Francisco. In 1824, the Mexican government granted land to James Humble at Point Reyes National Seashore in order to create a military post against American forces. The town of Point Reyes slowly grew up around Humble’s post and began trading with surrounding towns and villages. By 1853, Point Reyes had become an incorporated town under the name of “Cypress.” The town was renamed Cypress in honor of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during his visit to America in 1857. Because of its location on Monterey Bay and its maritime history, Cypress quickly became a center for shipbuilding and fishing. Shipbuilders including John Dory & Sons created some of the first large wooden vessels used in coastal commerce. In 1861, Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered Commodore Farragut to bomb San Francisco while he was on his way home from Mexico City after winning the battle of Alcatraz Island. As a result, much damage was done to both San Francisco andPoint Reyes which led to the nickname “The Damned Harbor” among local residents. In 1886, locomotive engineer George Stephenson donated land near Cypress for a branch line connecting Los Angeles with points east. This line eventually became part of CSX Transportation Company’s Coast Line Railroad system before becoming part of Amtrak when it merged intonational railroad company United States Railway Company (USR) in 1988). During World War II, Gulfstream Airlines operated out of Midway Airport from 1941-1945 as their aircraft manufacturing plant during World War II Western Hemisphere Air Command (WHAAC). In 1965, Cypress was incorporated as a city by ordinance; it annexed portions of nearby unincorporated areas in 1978 and 1984. The entertainment industry played an important role in developing Cypress into a vibrant community; Hollywood luminaries such as Gary Cooper (1901-1968), Spencer Tracy (1915-1994) and Katharine Hepburn (1922-2008) had their homes here while popular television series like "Gunsmoke" were shot on location throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Other prominent local personalities include Mayor Harry Bridges (1945-2009), who was reelected three times before he retired from office; author Toni Morrison (1962-2006); business executive David Caterpillar;Scientist Carl Sagan (1920-1996).
