When Cypress, California was first settled in 1871, it was a small farming community with only a few homes. However, over the years, the town has grown and changed significantly. Today, Cypress is home to a diverse population of about 55,000 people who are affiliated with more than 20 military installations. The town's history is anchored in its military presence. Cypress was originally part of the U.S. Army's maintenance battalion stationed at Fortify Point on San Pablo Bay. In 1862, the army transferred the battalion to Fort Worth and then to Cypress in 1864 as part of General George Armstrong Custer's ill-fated march through Texas and into Mexico City. The Battalion remained at Cypress until it was disbanded in 1865 due to budget cuts within the army. In 1886, when California became a state, Cypress became one of its first municipal areas and began receiving municipally funded services such as schools and fire protection. In 1907–08, when Coyote Hill Hospital opened up in nearby West Hollywood (now Hollywood), Cypress annexed adjacent property for hospital purposes along with much of west Orange County (now Los Angeles). It wasn't until 1928 that the city annexed all of east Orange County (now Jurupa Valley) including what is now Cypress Park by eminent domain proceedings following an attempt by local residents to block annexation by City Hall because they felt their land would be used for development rather than public use. The military presence in Cypress dates back to World War II when local residents donated land north of downtown for an airbase known as Lemmon Air Force Base No 2 ("Lemmon"). After Lemmon closed down in 1946, parts of the base were leased out for various civilian uses such as agricultural research farms and movie theaters which continued until 1984 when all remaining parts were sold off to Southern California Edison Company for $1 million dollars pursuant to a Memorandum Of Agreement between Mayor Herb Kleinman and then-CEO Bruce Ratner . At that point Lepson AFB had become just another name on Independence Boulevard - until it was acquired by America Online Incorporated on January 1st 1997 under CEO Bob Parsons . In 1873, Robert Hines founded Hines beer company with prospectors Edward Condon and Hiram Richardson near present day Cottonwood Hills east of town. In 1896 Wacoal Manufacturing Company began production of chemicals at site including asphalt and other products used especially for roads and bridges; plant closed in 1924 following World War I Luftwaffe bombing raids which destroyed many buildings including Arroyo Seco mine where asphalt was produced In 1925 Pacific Gas & Electric company built power plants west and northwest of town adjacent to Cottonwood Hills Mine then operated jointly with Hines until 1951; electric grid linked all communities within range starting 1923 An important aspect that sets Cypress apart from other communities throughout its history are its miles long sandy beachfront ridges reaching almostto sea level while still having access to inland waterways such as Mud Creek which provides drinking water for everyone within a mile radius The city signed an agreement with Google Inc., owners of YouTube, worth $1 billion in 2007 giving them access to all cypress city property along with nearby towns across nine square miles making it oneplexed community where users can upload videos or photos for anyone within earshot
