It is with sadness that we report the passing of Sergeant John Chavis, a long-time member of the Cypress National Guard. John was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was fighting the battle to beat it. He was an amazing man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. John enlisted in the Cypress National Guard in 1984 and served until his retirement in 2002. A native of Cypress, John loved nothing more than helping keep our community safe and secure. As a Guardsman, he was always there for those who needed him most and he will be truly missed.

Cypress, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 33,713 at the 2010 census. Cypress is located on the western edge of Orange County and bordered by Anaheim to the north, Newport Beach to the east, Laguna Hills to the south and Dana Point to the west. Cypress is known for its palm trees and its beaches which stretch for over 12 miles. The first recorded mention of Cypress occurred in 1846 when Elijah Howe wrote about a place called "Cypress" on his journey from Monterey Bay up San Andreas Pass. In 1853, Jens Jensen built a sawmill on Live Oak Creek near where Cypress now stands. By 1875, many citrus growers had moved into nearby Dana Point because of good soil quality around their trees-making Cypress one of Southern California's earliest wine towns. In 1908, developer Julius Rosenwald developed what became known as Rosenwald Park – an area that includes much of today’s downtown Cypress including Rosenwald Plaza and Greeneville Avenue – in what was then part of Anaheim (now Los Angeles). Rosenwald funded most of it himself with money he had saved from his successes as a real estate speculator and developer in New York City. The park attracted residents from all over Southern California who enjoyed its beautiful gardens (developed by landscape architect Will Rogers) and wide open spaces surrounded by high-rise office buildings until World War II when they were replaced by housing developments like Tower Place and North Park Drive. With Defense Department assistance during World War II, American cigar makers took up residency in nearby Newport Beach after leaving Havana; these locals created Newport Cigar Company Ltd., one of Northern California's first large cigar factories before it closed down in 1951 due to competition from Mexican cigars.). Afterward, many local businesses shuttered or went out OFFSIDE due to tough times during the postwar recession; however, several notable exceptions such as furniture store Rhodes Brothers & Son reopened in 1960 after being closed for 50 years while another noted landmark: Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s original transmission line across Live Oak Creek was repaired/ renewed multiple times over the years resulting in increased tourism activity around Cypress which led to new development along Live Oak Creek itself culminating with completion of CSX's new light rail line serving downtown Irvine throughout 2013 despite objections from some opponents who claimed that this would deplete essential water resources used by other industries adjacent to Light Rail lines.)

Cypress, California is a small town in the Western region of the United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2000 census. Cypress is located on Cypress Creek between miles marker 95 and 96 of I-5. The name "Cypress" probably comes from twooak trees that grew near the creek. The first oak was killed by a storm in 1814 and replaced with a fir. In 1868, General Doniphan built his headquarters at what is now known as Doniphan's Mill before moving east to Santa Fe in 1865. In 1870, Daniel Webster built his sawmill on Cottonwood Creek south of town. AfterWebster died in 1875, his son John built an additional sawmill which became the most important industry until it closed in 1922 because of World War II shortages of lumber. In 1912, General Electric constructed their first power plant west of Chicago along San Antonio River and Cypress Creek became one of its main sources for electricity generation. After numerous fires destroyed many structures in downtown Cypress during prohibition years (1912-1920), Mayor Waddell ordered water cannons be used to put out any fires that continued to rage despite being doused with water hoses multiple times per hour night and day long! This so called "water cannon policy" continues to this day as part of city ordinances! During World War II, much like other American towns, Cypress experienced rationing because there were not enough materials available to build up our military defenses against Japan's advancing forces; however, within weeks after Pearl Harbor they had all resumed production as there were adequate materials available once again!
Cypress was founded in 1853 by James H. Cypress and his brother John Cypress, two of the early settlers in what is now Orange County. The brothers named their town after a tree that stood near their home on the banks of the San Joaquin River. Cypress became one of Southern California's most important citrus towns, and its citizens were instrumental in developing California's viticultural industry.
