Cypress is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 24,582 at the 2010 census. Cypress is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and is bordered by San Bernardino to the north and west, Ontario to the east, Glendora to the south and west, and Chino Hills to the east. Cypress has been inhabited for thousands of years and was known as "the City of Ulysses" because it was home to one of California's first successful orange plantations. The area that now makes up Cypress was first settled by Mexican Americans in 1835. A post office called Rancho Los Alamitos was established in 1836. In 1854, an act of Congress made Cypress part of what would become Riverside County. In 1865, when water supplies were becoming scarce in southern California due to drought, Colonel John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at what is now Cypress Avenue/State Route 66. He named his new fort after him and began trading goods with Native American Indians who lived near his fort. By 1870s most of Sutter's original land had been developed into present-day Riverside County. 1st street south from US 60 between Old US 60 Business Loop (now SR 522) & FM 863 became State Route 66 upon its designation as a state highway on November 15th 1959 from Chino Hills Rd./SR 381 all the way down to Sylmar (then just within Sylmar town limits). Today 1st Street SW from I-15 (exit 133) becomes SR 522 which runs concurrently with FM 863 for about mile before splitting off again towards Ontario
