The United States Army Garrison in Daly City, California was established in 1859 as an outpost on the edge of San Francisco Bay. In 1891, it became a military post with headquarters at Fort Point. Daly City, California is a city in San Francisco County, California. It is the most populous city in the Bay Area of San Francisco and its population was 71,824 as of the 2010 census. The Mission District covers much of the eastern edge of Daly City while Midtown is located within the western edge. The University of California at Berkeley is located within downtown Daly City. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game near what is now Jack London Square. They called this area "Napa Valley" because Napa River flowed through it. In 1845, John Cranch discovered oil shale here and named it Rancho Bernardo after his brother-in-law Bernardo de la Vega whose holdings included part of what are now Daly City and MidtownSan Francisco. A decade later, prospectors from Nevada arrived and began mining gold nearby at Sutter's Mill onshore; by 1858, about 200 men were working there full time extracting gold ores from hills that stand today around Milpitas Creek which flows into San Pablo Bay. By 1870, when Congress created Yosemite National Park and established towns throughout California as part of that park system, Daly City was one such town. In 1876–77 Captain James Wolkovich led a group overland from Vallejo to Sacramento via Yuba Pass with his wagon train for a transcontinental railroad trip he had planned but never completed because of an American Civil War delay in completing the Central Pacific Railroad across America (the first transcontinental rail line). Upon reaching Salt Lake Valley he left all his equipment behind - including food and water supplies - on arrival at Bear Flag Station 5 miles east of present day Daly City on July 10thenesday renamed Springdale after himself! He brought back word that Southern Pacific Railway was building a track north from Sacramento via Gold Rush Mines #1 & #2 northeast to Yuba Pass where they would cross the US – Canada border!Wolkovich became one of America’s earliest entrepreneurs during this era thanks in large part to fellow Californian George Hearst who financed construction along both tracks!
