Daly City was founded in 1887 by John Daly and his brother Michael Daly as a citrus grove. The first coffee shop opened in 1888 in the basement of the local post office. In 1898, the brothers started selling their coffee through a door on Second Street. In 1916, they opened their own roasted-bean store at 6th and Mission Streets. In 1928, they moved to 14th and Market Streets and later to 16th Avenue between Guerrero and Russian Hill streets. By the early 1960s, Daly City's population had grown so large that it was difficult to keep up with the demand for their beans and roasts, so they decided to close their business in 1966. In 1984, they reopened as an art gallery called "The Gallery." They continue operation as an art gallery until 2000 when they sold the building to new owners who turned it into an apartment complex.
