Captain Duffy also ordered two light ferries built to ferry sailors and passengers across the bay to Point Reyes Station. These boats were known as "Daly City Ferry" because they operated only from Diaz Street Pier until 1906 when they were replaced by larger vessels equipped with lifeboats and an air defence system. Although most of what is now Daly City was agricultural land at that time, some of it was donated by individuals or businesses who saw potential for development around their properties line up along State Route 1 (present day Highway 101). This led to some interesting gift history stories around town such as: - In 1905, developer Harry Guggenheim donated land east of downtown for a civic center which would house a library, theater, parkland and other public amenities; - In 1916 developer Charles Wertheimer donated land west of downtown for another civic center which would house an art museum and sports arena; - In 1958 developer Adolphus Busch donated land north of present day Powell Boulevard for an airport which would be home to both US Airways Airlines (now Delta)and United Airlines (now American). This donation allowed Busch family descendants access to one of California's largest commercial areas; - In 1978 philanthropist David Sarnoff donated money towards renovating Dana Beach Pier so that it could become an open-air museum focus on California coastal cultures instead of just marine science; – Finally in 1992 Developer Don Bigham gifted $100K towards expanding Marine Science Center into what is now called Science Park at Dana Beach Pier; all these donations have helped shape Daly City into what it is today!
