Daly City, California is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 24,645 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of San Francisco Peninsula and is bounded by the Mission District to the east, Valencia Street to the north, Potrero Hill to the west and various industrial areas to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Daly City were Spanish missionaries in 1776. A grant of 640 acres (248 hectares) was made available for settlement in 1836 by Colonel James K. Polk as part of Rancho Santa Clara de Almagro grantee Jose Sanchez y Quiroga's claim for land grants near San Francisco Bay. Englishman John Copley Purchas visited this area in 1788 and named it after Captain George Daly of HMS "Endeavour" who had landed there with troops from England during their expedition against Mexico City. purchased land from José Sanchez y Quiroga in 1836; he set about developing it into a town known as Allston on November 4, 1839. During its early years, Daly City consisted of small villages scattered around an open space called Plaza de la Concordia that served as its centerpiece and political hub. In 1863, when Don Pedro Menéndez founded Palo Alto's first school - Menéndez Normal School - on his estate within town limits (now University Avenue), he also laid out streets and extended sidewalks through his property across Plaza de la Concordia so that children could play together without fear of being run over or scolded by adults. This model of village-town interaction would be emulated throughout Silicon Valley untilNetworking cafes replaced plazas as neighborhood hubs in recent decades). Daly City is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 24,745 at the 2010 census. Daly City was founded on December 6, 1878 by Captain John Daly and his brother-in-law Augustus Chapman as part of the new townsite of Pacific Heights. The first post office in Daly City opened on March 15, 1879. It was renamed to honor Daniel Fenton Daly in 1909. In 1912, the city built a water main from the Donahue Canal to provide water for San Francisco and Daly City residents became billing subscribers to the system. In 1916, when San Francisco voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation of nearby East Palo Alto into the city limits, Daly City joined annexed East Palo Alto also. On November 3, 1931, following a fire that destroyed 30 buildings in downtown San Francisco including homes of Mayor George Brown and General Manager Harry Bridges (the cause remains under investigation), Proposition 8 was passed by voters to authorize fire protection for all citizens over 21 years old withincity limits with one exception: children under 12 were not allowed inside schools or other public buildings without parents or guardians present. This law continued until it was repealed in 1974 pursuant to Proposition 209 which banned racial discrimination in public education facilities throughout California statewide. Daly City has had its share of famous residents including author Jules Verne and actor/director Douglas Fairbanks Sr..
The first permanent European settlement in what is now Daly City was a group of French Canadians who set up a mission in 1836. The Mission District, which today includes most of the city, was part of San Francisco until 1859 when it became part of the new California Territory. In 1876, the California Legislature passed an act authorizing the founding of a city within the new territory and on July 12, 1876, Daly City was granted city status by Governor John J. Gold Rush.
