In 1933, Mayor George Christopher merged two nearby towns - South San Francisco and Novato - to form a new city called San Mateo County on the eastern edge of downtown Daly City. This method was most likely used to preserve the coffee because it would not spoil over time. The Egyptians also brewed their coffee using this same process. However, they used a different type of ground fruit which resulted in a more bitter cup of coffee. After the Pharaohs became interested in drinking this type of coffee, they started to purchase beans from local farmers and roast them themselves. This allowed them to get quite good quality beans without having to go through expensive middlemen. Throughout the Middle Ages, people would use firewood as their source for roasted coffee beans. However, because the firewood had such low acidity levels, it did not taste very good when consumed cold or after being cooked long enough to turn it into some form of foodstuff. This is probably why most early European cooks did not include roasted Coffee within their cuisine until much later on in history. Eventually, Dutch traders began importing whole bean coffees from Africa and Asia which gave birth to what we know today as Dutch Coffee culture. These traders were familiar with Indian-made spices and black pepper which contributed greatly to the flavor profile of modern Dutch Coffee products! Daly City was founded in 1887 by Captain John Daly and his brother Lieutenant Josiah Daly. The original Rancho San Antonio land grant was given to Captain Daly by Governor Alameda C. Captain John Daly's family continued to own and operate the ranch until it was sold in 1912 to Ernest Hemingway, who changed its name to "Hemingway Ranch". The city began growth slowly but steadily in the early 1900s as a result of its location on Highway 1, which connected Oakland with San Francisco. In 1925, the California State Legislature designated Daly City as an incorporated town. Shortly thereafter, work commenced on building what is now downtown Daly City across from where the old Hemingway ranch used to stand. The project cost $2 million and was completed in 1928. Daly City has had many different occupants over the years, including a number of famous writers and celebrities such as Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Ezra Pound. In recent years, it has become home to a large population of Latino immigrants who have made it their permanent residence. The city is currently experiencing rapid growth due to new development along Highway 1 and other commercial corridors that are opening up throughout the city limits.
