The United States Navy has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The navy was founded in 1775 as the Continental Navy and participated in many battles during the Revolutionary War. The navy played an important role in World War II, providing support for the Allied cause. After World War II, the navy was disbanded and its resources were divided among other government departments. However, it still maintains a presence in our society through its Naval Reserve force and Naval Aviation program. The navy gift history can be traced back to 1859 when Rear Admiral John Rodgers organized a collection of naval memorabilia and artifacts at the Norfolk Naval Yard. This collection became known as USS Rodgers Collection. The first Navy gift was given by Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison on December 10th, 1959 to Commodore Luther Purdy of USS Constitution (22). From this point on, gifts from members of the military community become common occurrences throughout the years. In 1966, Rear Admiral Don Halsey presented Commandant Rudolf Blumhardt with a set of authentic German U-boat torpedoes as a gift for his service during World War II (U-boat Museum). In 1969, Commodore Rickover presented Vice Admiral James Stockdale with a new warship – USS George Washington (CVN 76) – as part of their Fleet Association Dinner Honor Roll Program (National Museum of American History). After Commodore Rickover's death in 1978, his wife provided additional funds for USS George Washington (CVN 76) via her foundation called "RickoverFoundation". Through this foundation and subsequent donations from individuals and groups across America,USS George Washington (CVN 76) has been kept fully operational since 1982! Additionally, each year between November 8th and 12th various ships from different fleets visit San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to present awards named after Commodore Rickover such as "Commodore Rickover Awards" or simply "Rickovers". It is interesting to note that not all gifts given by Admirals are ongoing examples of Navy culture being shared within our society; some gifts are more short-lived examples that quickly fade into obscurity like USS Yorktown's replacement catapult system which was only used once! For example, USS Enterprise's new main battery installation which replaced aging artillery pieces was only used twice before it too faded into obscurity! Overall however, it is clear that there is much naval history associated with Daly City - something that we take pride in here at USNA!

The USS Daly City was a United States Navy ship that served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The ship was named for Captain John F. Daly, commanding officer of the USS Bunker Hill when it was sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers on 8 December 1942.
Daly City, California is a city located in San Francisco County, California. The population was 681,827 as of the 2010 census. Daly City became a town in 1887 and then a city in 1945. The name "Daly City" is first mentioned in 1602 when Captain John Daly and his men explored the area. In 1887, the city was named after Father Damien de la Garde who had been imprisoned at Yerba Buena Cove by Governor Pio Pico because he opposed Spanish rule over Californias Indian tribes. On November 8, 1944, Daly City became an independent city under the leadership of Mayor James J. Fenton with boundaries defined by Fillmore Street on the east and Webster Avenue on the west. The downtown district historically included much of what is now Midtown San Francisco and The Presidio which are both adjacent to Daly City on Capitol Hill. Today most of Downtown Daly City is contained within One Financial Center which also includes part of University Village within its borders The costal areas extending into San Mateo County include Menlo Park, Redwood Shores, Palo Alto and Atherton In recent years there has been considerable redevelopment taking place within downtowns such as First Christian Church (now called Christ United Methodist Church) on 12th Street between Geary Boulevard and King Street; Regency Ballroom/Lemon Gardens nightclub on Mason Drive between Second Avenue and Masonic Drive; North Point Estates housing developments adjacent to Mission Bay; Pacific Heights; South Pointe;[and] Heyday Cinemas located along Seventh Avenue near Civic Center BART Station

Daly City was founded in 1887 by George Daly and his wife, Emma. The city is located on the San Francisco Peninsula about 15 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco. Daly City became a incorporated town in 1911. In 1951, it merged with the neighboring city of Redwood City to form the current city of Daly City. Daly City was a rapidly growing agricultural town during its early years. The first store in Daly City opened in 1887 and the first post office was established in 1889. By 1912, Daly City had become one of the leading commuter towns for San Francisco because of its close proximity to work opportunities and its easy access to highways. In 1951, when California became an independent country, DalyCity's merger with RedwoodCity created what is now known as Silicon Valley
Daly City, California was founded on October 29, 1859 by Eli Daly and Jameson Daly. The city was named for John F. Daly, the brother of Eli and Jameson. The first post office in Daly City opened on December 1, 1859. In 1865, Captain George Waddell built a sawmill at the mouth of the San Francisco River in what is now known as Oakland. The mill produced lumber until it closed in 1911. In 1868, José Miguel Zaragoza purchased land east of present-day downtown Daly City from Abelardo de la Garza for $10 per acre. Zaragoza began to build a Rancho Segundo Adobe near the current intersection of Union Street and El Camino Real Road. On July 6, 1870, José Miguel Zaragoza sold his rancho to Jameson Daly for $15 per acre. Jameson Daly leased the land to Michael Davitt for $2 an acre beginning on January 1, 1871. On May 25th of that year Michael Davitt sold his interest in the Rancho Segundo Adobe to Samuel Merrill for $300 plus five acres west of Municipal Road (later Interstate 80). Merrill agreed tokeep all but one hundred acres and has since been considered one of Daly City's earliest settlers along with entrepreneurs such as Peter Kesselman and Don Bolles who also ranched there during this time frame
