In 1906, the city annexed part ofOakland County and its population increased to 150,000 people within a few years. On January 1, 1934, the city changed its name to San Francisco Bay Area for promotional purposes only and never ratified it by referendum. Today it has a population of over 2 million residents living in its six counties: Marin County (the easternmost), Contra Costa County (the southwesternmost), Alameda County (the central portion), San Mateo County (northwest from downtown ), Santa Clara County (southwest from downtown ) and Yuba Counties (east from downtown ). Grant surveyed land adjacent to what is now Daly City for their new town site which would become known as "Alameda".
