Daly City is a city located in San Francisco, California. The population was 12,597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south side of San Francisco Peninsula and on the border of Oakland County and Contra Costa County. Daly City is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in North America with a wide range of cultures represented. Its eight neighborhoods are: Downtown, Park Slope, Midtown, SoMa/South Beach, Mission Bayou/Bayview Terrace, Gilroy Gardens (northwest corner), and Willow Glen (southeast corner). The first people to live in Daly City were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food from the area now known as downtown San Francisco. In 1846, Captain George Graham founded what would becomeGraham Station on Rancho Perro Negro east of present-day Daly City. The station served as a stop for travelers along the Russian River Road. A year later, Captains John Blythe and Timothy White established another outpost at what is now Midtown San Francisco. Blythe's Post was built on land that would later be part of downtown Daly City proper. James Fenton arrived in 1849 to found the community around Fenton's Landing which became Midtown San Francisco after he acquired property adjacent to present-day SoMa district. In 1852 Drury replaced White as captain at Graham Station; soon afterwards Drury began to build an adobe mission called "Mission Dolores" within what today is Mission Bayou/Bayview Terrace neighborhood east of downtownSan Francisco peninsula." Mission Dolores" failed due to too high costs ($2 per head) associated with building an imposing structure and its location across from Candlestick Park made it difficult for residents to visit or send goods back home during daytime hours; accordingly instructions were given not to open interior doors except for emergency cases." By 1860 Mission Dolores had been abandoned by Drury but his successors continued construction until their respective deaths in 1865 & 1870 respectively; consequently it came into possession of various families through marriage over time." Finally it was purchased by American Pacific Railroad Company in 1886 who named it after their president & CEO Samuel Morse – posthumously becoming Morse Place." On October 25th 1888 Samuel Morse addressed a crowd assembled outside his new company headquarters including Mayor James Rolph whose inauguration could be seen from insideMorse Place" when he announced:"I have just opened my eyes within this building which has long been under your observation...It will givemarked satisfaction I think when you know that there are no spies among us – only honest men trying to do their duty".
