Dana Point, California is home to one of the most active and robust military deployment history in the United States. The city has been host to more than 100 different deployments over the past few decades, including both World War II and Desert Storm. Thismilitary deployment history has left a lasting legacy on Dana Point. The city was founded by American soldiers who served in World War I. After the war, Dana Point became a naval base and then an agricultural center. In 1930, when San Diego County was created, Dana Point became part of it. The city’s population grew rapidly during the 1940s and 1950s as defense spending increased in America. During these years, military installations were built in the area such as Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach. In 1992, following passage of the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1992, the City Council passed an ordinance allowing for military deployments within its boundaries without prior approval from Mayor Tom Bates or City Manager John Cervi. This ordinance came into effect on July 1st, 1992 and allowed for military forces to be deployed at any time without warning or compensation to residents. Since then, Dana Point has become known for its active military deployment history - both before and after passage of state law legalizing such deployments statewide in 2002. The city has also become well-known for hosting various events related to thisHistory - from parades honoring local veterans to special events surrounding Military Day each year (April 14th). 1) World War II: On December 8th 1941, USS Arizona sunk off Dana Point while under tow from Long Beach Naval Shipyard due to defects with her propellers caused by enemy air attacks that day; 2) Gulf War I: On August 2nd 1990 USS Stark bombed Tripoli killing 43 people; 3) Desert Storm: In 1991 US Marines landed at Ali Baba Airfield near Tandil Iraq after Saddam Hussein's forces had invaded Kuwait; 4) Operation Neptune’s Spear – February 15th 1979 — UAR helicopter gunship operating over Cambodian capital Phnom Penh downed two Vietnamese MiG fighter planes flown by North Vietnam that morning resulting in 46 deaths with 11 survivors being rescued by Australian Navy HMAS Perth; 5) Operation Olympic Games – April 6th 1896 — Ulysses S Grant delivered address before opening game between American Athletic Club & New York Mutual Life Insurance Company at Madison Square Garden becoming only first ever sitting president to do so outside of his own country

The Dana Point Coast Guard Auxiliary's 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9) deployed in support of Operation Unified Protector on Dec. 7-12, 2006. The battalion was comprised of five enlisted men and one officer. The battalion was mobilized at Camp Pendleton, California and arrived at Diego Garcia on Dec. 12th as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). On Dec. 15th the battalion set up shop at Naval Base Diego Garcia while they awaited orders to move inland. On Jan 1st 2007 they began their march towards Baghdad where they would relieve 3/8 Marines in support of the Iraqi Defense Forces. They reached Baghdad on Jan 5th after a hard fought battle against enemy forces that included artillery, tanks and RPG's raining down upon them from high above ground level. After reaching Baghdad the battalion relieved 3/8 Marines who were then tasked with holding back an attacking force loyal to Al Qaeda elements operating inside the city limits. After relief operations were complete the battalion prepared for redeployment home however orders never came through so they stayed put until May when they were called back to active duty in Southern California as part of Operation Neptune Spear which aimed to oust Taliban insurgents from Afghanistan's Helmand Province. Once again their deployment lasted six weeks this time consisting of three weeks fighting in Kunar Province before returning home to rest for two months prior to deploying once more for another nine week tour in Afghanistan
Dana Point, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is included in the La Jolla–San Diego Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dana Point was founded on October 14, 1887 by Captain Edward Dana and his wife Elizabeth Morrow Dana as a summer home for themselves and their two children. The town grew rapidly with the discovery of oil reserves in nearby Imperial Valley in 1911 and soon became an important transportation center for oil workers travelling to Southern California. The original white homes were built on a peninsula extending into the Pacific Ocean about south of downtown San Diego. By 1925 there were over 100 residences and businesses including gasoline stations, stores, hotels and churches. In 1952 when Interstate 8 was completed through the area much of what had been developed as residential areas was razed to make way for new expressways vital to the growth of nearby Disneyland and other heavy industry locations. In recent years much of what had once been commercial property has been redeveloped into housing developments such as Dana Point Village which opened in 2006 adjacent to Newport Beach Regional Airport

Dana Point is a small town in the southern San Luis Obispo County of California. It was founded by pioneers in 1857, and has been an important center for maritime trade and commerce since its founding. The town's economy has been based on shipbuilding, fishing, tourism, and agriculture. In recent years it has become a popular tourist destination for swimming, surfing, and scuba diving. Dana Point is located on the eastern coast of Dana Point Peninsula on the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula is long and narrow with a height of about 100 feet (30 meters). It forms part of the Coast Ranges system that run along the southeastern edge of San Luis Obispo County. The towns of Dana Point Village and North Dana Point are to the north-northwest, while Harbor Island to the east is separated from Dana Point Peninsula by a distance of about 5 miles (8 kilometers). The earliest evidence for habitation at present-day Dana Point dates back to 1857 when three men named Elisha Cook set up a trading post near today'sizabethtown Beach on Long Beach Peninsula. In 1859 another group consisting of captain John Dutton and his son James Dutton built a small lighthouse at what is now called Light House Hill which served as both commercial beacon and warning station against Channel Islands pirates operating off Santa Barbara County between Newport Beach in Orange County southward to Islip in Suffolk County. Dana Point was founded by Captain James Cook on November 12, 1768 as a trading post on the mouth of the San Nicolas River. The first European settler in Dana Point was Manuel Nieto, who built a houseboat called "Nieto" in 1772. In 1821, Captain John D. Sloat placed an ad in The Californian for workers to clear land for him and his associates in what is now Huntington Beach. By 1824, there were about 20 people living at Dana Point. In 1869, the town of Dana Point was platted and named after Rear Admiral John J. Dana who served as Commodore of U.S Naval forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1871, Captains Gideon Welles and William Halsey established military posts at Dana Point with artillery pieces and stores to protect against possible pirate attacks from Mexico City. In 1906, the California Shipbuilding Company erected a shipyard at Dana Point which became one of Southern California's largest shipyards throughout World War I and II. The company produced ships for both America's war effort and its allies such as Japan during World War II. In 1951, construction began on what is now known as Marine One White House complex after President Harry S Truman announced his intention to travel by airto Washington D C aboard Air Force One when he visited that year's inauguration ceremonies in Washington D C . The project cost $2 billion and was completed in 1961
