In 1903, William Hickey founded Kingdom Air Lines and soon became one of OC's leading aviation entrepreneurs with his company flying dirigibles, seaplanes and airships from Long Beach Municipal Airport until 1923 when he sold all interests to brothers Floyd and Harry Wright for $1 million USD. In 1923, Kingdom Air Lines merged with Western Air Lines which then merged with American Airlines in 1944 to form America West Airways Corporation before being bought by United Airlines in 1951 for $8 million dollars. Dana Point experienced rapid growth following America West Airways Corporation's purchase of United Airlines; its population increased from 3,000 residents in 1951 to over 50,000 by 1960 due largely to new construction associated with United Airlines' expansion into Southern California:the original airport buildings were replaced by larger structures that still stand today including the westernmost terminal building now used as an office tower called Tower One (now known as City Hall). This expansion also led to white flight – prior black residents had long been concentrated within close proximity of downtown where many services were available such as grocery stores, banks and transportation systems unavailable outside their neighborhoods or at great cost inside white areas like Newport Beach or Laguna Niguel which were becoming increasingly segregated during this time period……………………………………………………………..
