In 1821, about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of present-day Dana Point, Anglo American pioneer Captain George Ayer established Rancho San Marcos de la Bahia on a tract of land that later became part of Los Angeles County. On July 1, 1827, Ayer sold 2 leagues (3 km) east of present-day Dana Point to José Antonio Cámpora for $5 per acre ($200 per hectare). The donation by Ayer remains one of the earliest recorded donations to any organization in Los Angeles County. On December 7, 1882–January 3, 1883 Alvarado brothers built an adobe lighthouse at Whatcom Headland near where they would become residents as well as operate it until 1912 when they moved back ashore due to high waves crashing against their property; during its time it was known as "the Blanco Light". After Mexican independence was granted in 1910 following US annexation of Mexico under President Grant's Proclamation 9 Tejon Canyon lighthouse served as both Mexican National lighthouse and commercial lightkeeper station until 1934 when it was automated by virtue Order No.(1) Renowned amateur astronomer Edwin Hubble used Whatcom Headland for observing observations beginning on April 6th 1923 ending on March 24th 1924 which led to his discovery ofromeda galaxy cluster and first use of telescope within our Solar System! It has been reported that Admiral Isidoro García y Maletty commissioned photographer Francisco Nunez Márquez to take pictures inside what is now called “Dana” just before its destruction by fire – this event may be significant given that many early California architecture photographs were taken from atop buildings or cliffs overlooking water bodies such as these
