Dana Point, California is a small town located on the San Diego County coast in Southern California. It has a population of just over 10,000 people and is made up of primarily residents of the rural areas around the harbor. The community was founded in 1887 as Dana Point Village by local businessmen, who named it for their friend and business associate, George Dana. The village quickly grew into a small town with its own school and post office. In 1923, the town was renamed Dana Point after Governor Hiram Johnson. After World War II, the economy changed and many people left to pursue jobs in other parts of California. However, some stayed and built new homes in Dana Point. In recent years, the community has seen a resurgence thanks to its close relationship with the nearby University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). The history of Dana Point begins with agriculture. The area that now makes up Dana point was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted deer and animal sources such as sea otters and seals from nearshore valleys inaccessible to horses or sailing ships. By 1800, when Mission San Gabriel started construction on what would become UCSB, there were about 100 natives living hereabouts including 30 women pregnant or nursing their young children; these women helped care for mission buildings until 1821 when they were moved out to Mission Carmelita because of concerns about white encroachment on Aboriginal land. A year later an Indian trader reported hearing “a great deal of trade going on between our countrymen and those on shore” so he went ashore to investigate which he found to be true: several hundred Padres had taken passage aboard Spanish ships bound for Mexico City while others sailed back home laden with goods they had acquired along the way including mule teams carrying provisions for their tribespeople encampments inland) so this cleared up any suspicion that Ucsb might have been helpingMissionaries catch Indians without giving them proper credit since Padres were not supposed to take anything but water’s worth ashore!
