Dana Point, California is a small town located on the mouth of the Pacific Ocean in San Diego County, California. The population was 66 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger city of San Diego. Dana Point is home to one of America's most popular amusement parks - Golden Gate Park - as well as several smaller beaches and a few miles of shoreline. Dana Point was founded by Commodore John Doolittle on November 15, 1887, when he and his squadron sailed from Los Angeles aboard USS Constitution to explore and trade with Japan. They discovered an area which they called "The Promised Land". The land had been purchased by Mexican traders from Native Americans who were living there before that time. The first store was built at what is now downtown Dana Point in 1892 and soon afterwards began to grow rapidly with businesses like grocery stores, saloons, hotels, bakeries and other services popping up all over town. In 1925, Captain James Clifford Fenton donated land comprising most of present-day Dana Point Beach for use as a public beachhead during World War II while he served as commanding officer of USS Porter (DD-617). This gave rise to the nickname "Dana Beach" because so much commercial activity took place there during wartime that it became known as an important military base for supplies and reinforcements. In 1960�s resident Tom Wolfe wrote about life in this brief but memorable period in American history in his book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test". Today's Dana Point has seen rapid growth since its incorporation into City Council District 5 in 2002 following the passage of Proposition 13; it now includes portions of DowntownSAN DIEGO also included within incorporated City Limits until 2008 when those boundaries were changed again following passage Proposition 19 granting annexation by city officials including developers who had earlier unsuccessfully tried to establish themselves outside city limits).
