In 1916, the navy moved its naval depot to Dana Point from San Diego. The first ship to be stored here was USS Constitution (1897). The navy continued to store ships here until 1966 when it moved its headquarters to Long Beach. From 1966-1978, Dana Point served as home base for Operation Neptune's Spear which was responsible for destroying North Vietnam's torpedo boats and submarines. In 1978, the navy transferred its operations ashore to Seal Beach and then Huntington Beach. In 2000, they again relocated their headquarters when they opened a new facility in Draeger Park on Ortega Boulevard in Dana Point. The current fleet of warships includes 21 vessels including 10 destroyers and six submarines.

The name "Dana Point" comes from Anna Maria Dana's father, John Dana, who named the peninsula after himself. The original beach at Dana Point was called "Island Beach." In 1915, Ernest Hemingway wrote an article for Collier's magazine entitled "A Day in the Life at Dana Point," which described how he spent his time there while attending college at USC. The following year, Hemingway published another article for Collier's entitled "A Night at Dana Point." In 1923, James Baldwin visited Dana Point and reported that it was then "the most beautiful place I have ever been to." He also mentioned that its beaches are very clean and its climate is perfect for swimming. In 1951, Hollywood producer Darryl Zanuck bought land adjacent to the point where he planned to build two new movie studios – Universal City Studios and Paramount Pictures – but construction never began due to World War II efforts during which much of Southern California was destroyed. However, this area now contains many warehouses used by Major League Baseball (MLB) as well as other businesses such as Toyota Motorsports Park. In 1995, Disney purchased all of Paramount Pictures' assets including their studio lot at Daly City in Northern California; however they maintained residual rights over all future movies made there until 2006 when those rights were sold to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Motion Picture Company (MGM). Dana Point is a town in California, United States. It is located on the San Diego Peninsula, about 20 miles south of downtown San Diego and 10 miles east of the City of Dana Point. The population was 8,925 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Dana Point was John Doheny in 1847, and it became a port for goods brought by ship from Northern California to Southern California. In 1851, Captain Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on what is now known as Doheny Beach. In 1892, The State of California granted title to a tract of land that included present-day Dana Point and adjoining areas including Carlsbad Caverns National Park, making it part of the newly created County of Santa Barbara. In 1912, Captain John Dickey bought 7 acres (2 ha) at Soquel Head Light from Elias Pineapple for $5 per acre ($140 per km²). He named his new resort "Dana Point" after his mother's maiden name. In 1923/24, post office operator A.N. Wright developed an oil well near Carlsbad Caverns National Park while still under development as a national oil field; he christened this well "Dana Point Shale". This well production began operations during World War II and continued until 1973 when production ceased due to environmental concerns over offshore drilling methods employed then hydraulic fracturing (fracking). A number of large cruise ships were docked at Dana Point Harbor until they were turned over to Naval Air Station Miramar in 1988 following passage through the Panama Canal; NAS Miramar later became homeport for USS Enterprise CVN(L) . From NAS Miramar many vessels moored along Doheny Beach for use by both commercial fishermen and pleasure boaters before being towed out into open waterway beyond Moss Landing where they could be landed again for sale or use by larger vessels or passengers on their way ashore or back upwind to port
